Oh my! New month, new year and, for a lot of folks that means, new resolutions for healthy living. What better place to start than with introducing some essential oils to your routine! My oils crew, Shauna & Jan, suggested we share inspiration for how you can use essential oils to help achieve some of the common New Year’s resolutions. Healthy Habit: Drink More Water

Ok, this is a big one for a lot of people! It’s crazy how easy it is to let this one vital step pass you by each day. I know because I used to barely drink any water! The day I decided to be much more conscious of drinking water was a game changer. It was more a mental practice than anything, but oh what an effect it has had. My skin is so much healthier, I feel loads better, and get less headaches. I drink a large glass of water first thing in the morning {before I allow myself any coffee}. Then another glass of water before any coffee refills. A large glass of water whenever I come back home, and at every meal, and at least 2 large glasses of water in the evening {preferably before 8:30pm}. Still need to get in the habit of bringing a water bottle along with me on my journeys out & about.

If you are looking to drink more water too, but need some encouragement to enjoy it, we highly suggest adding a drop or two of an essential oil to your water {just avoid using plastic cups & water bottles; glass & stainless steel are the best}. Healthy Habit: Exercise

This is the quintessential resolution for the start of a New Year. People flock to the gyms in January! Although we can’t guarantee that any essential oil will keep you going to the gym month after month {that one is on you babe}, we do have suggestions on what to use on those sore & tired muscles or for an energy boost to carry you through a work out. Deep Relief is a personal favourite. I popped a roller cap onto my bottle and apply directly to sore muscles after a weightlifting session. Aroma Siez is another oil that is good to use for muscle discomfort after exercise. Dilute with a carrier oil and apply to neck, back and sore muscles. Wintergreen is a great oil for getting you pumped before a workout or keeping that post-workout energy going!

Healthy Habit: Increase Energy

Looking to kick start your day or make it through the week? If you need to get tasks done & stay focused, there are many different oils that can help. You can’t go wrong with Lemon, Peppermint or En-R-Gee oils. Lemon and Peppermint combined in the diffuser or used separately with other oils, provide some great pick-me-up energy. The oil blend En-R-Gee is great applied to the bottom of your feet {diluted with a carrier oil} or diffused.

Healthy Habit: Kick Sugar Cravings

We would never advocate trying to “lose weight” with essential oils alone, but there are some oils known to help with sugar cravings. Combining these with home-cooked meals, good rest, and exercise, could help you reach your weight goals. Young Living now offers Slique Essence, a blend of citrus oils & Stevia, which you can add to your water, tea or smoothie. You can also simply try diluting Dill essential oil with a carrier oil and applying to your wrists as cravings hit. And here’s a simple veggie capsule recipe you can use to aid in digestion, metabolism & sugar cravings: 2 drops each of Peppermint, Grapefruit, and Lemon oils topped off with fractionated coconut oil {taken 1-2 times daily}.

Healthy Habit: More Sleep

There’s a lot of us trying to function on less than “optimal” sleep requirements. Getting more, restful sleep is an awesome resolution to have! Like drinking more water, it can be a major step in improving your overall mental & physical health. And there are lots of essential oils to help with restful sleep. Say this one with me… Lavender. If there is only ONE essential oil to own, it is Lavender! Seriously. It was my gateway oil. I started dabbing a small drop under my nose & onto my wrists before bed over two years ago, and I still do it now. It also goes into the diffuser in our bedroom each evening too. I rarely have trouble falling asleep because of it’s relaxation properties. Cedarwood, Vetiver, and Chamomile are also great suggestions for use in the diffuser at bedtime.

Other important tips on getting better/more sleep: end screen time at least 1 hour before bed & avoid bright lights, read for at least 20-30 minutes before bed using indirect lighting, try to finish drinking all your water in the early evening {I try to cut myself off at 8:30pm so I can avoid needing the bathroom too much in the night}, and keep pen & paper by your bed in case a thought wakes you up {write it down, get it out of your head, and go back to sleep}.
