Farm Days: Farmhouse

Farm Days: The Farmhouse - Building our farmhouse for Happiness By The Acre

I thought it would be fun to share our farmhouse building progress on the blog {finally}. Mostly a visual story of the progress so far. Breaking ground on farmland to put in the very first building on 150 acres, actually requires a lot more steps than simply starting to dig {like designing//determining all the land usage} and hubby is much more qualified to speak on that stuff. I have the most basic understanding of “keyline design” and farm workflow. My approach to the building is a combination of practical use & dream home vision.

So join me for a little peek at what’s been happening so far!

From April of 2017. We were sorting out the actual building site {we had two or three potential sites}. We opted for one that will allow us to see the majority of our fields.

June 2017 – We moved our new-to-us trailer to the farm. This is what the three of us & two cats lived in for the summer. We called her Legend. No running water & no flush toilet. Power lines were installed half way through the summer.

July 2017 – Ground work for the farmhouse began!! The previous months we had a dugout, first road, and a water well installed.

It was so exciting each day from here on out! The construction crew made the days noisy, but once they finished, we had some peaceful evenings pondering things to come.

July 2017 – Footings freshly poured. We wrote our names & year into the wet cement, even though it won’t be visible. We liked the idea of knowing our little family is at the “root” of this whole project.

July 2017 – The basement walls and foundation went in. It’s just a small utility basement where we will keep the cisterns for well water collection.

August 2017 – The walls start to go up!

September 2017 – The upper floor loft starts to go on!! It finally looks more like an actual building.

October 2017 – The deck is going on. The roof is on. Rooms inside are starting to get framed.

February 2018 – The farmhouse is almost a full building. All the electric has been installed, plumping is almost there (just need to put sinks & toilets in). The garage door looks amazing!! And I love the metal roof colour we chose! Drywall is up inside too. Now we are starting to tackle things like, buying tile for the bathrooms, finalizing the layout of the small kitchen, choosing light fixtures, etc.

It’s honestly amazing to look back on these photos and see how far along things have come! When we pulled up to the farm last week, I was floored by the realization of how much it has changed in the past year & a half. Still, just that fact that we have a road onto our property delights me. And now this simple, smallish, but lovely building is there too. Waiting for attention from us. Waiting to be lived in. So excited to bring some life and soul to this building in the coming months!

P.S. – We are not doing this work ourselves. We hired a local designer who specializes in net-zero rural home designs. She put us in contact with a wonderful contractor and small building crew. I adored those guys last summer. Incredibly polite, clean, thoughtful, & respectful of our land. Not at all what I expected from a building crew, honestly.
