Around Town: Paint Nite - Mom's Night Out

Had the immense pleasure of attending my first “paint nite” a couple of weeks ago. It was actually my Christmas gift to my sister-in-law. A mom’s night off to drink wine, chat, and do something creative together. I booked spots in a class at Raw Canvas in Kensington. There are several places around Calgary that offer similar things {even found one for doing “rustic sign painting”, which I would love to try}. I picked Raw Canvas because a friend had attended a paint nite there.

If you have yet to hear about the “paint nite” phenomenon, then let me give you the quick run down. You purchase tickets to an event beforehand, show up, and have fun. The organizers provide your supplies. Drinks and food are generally extra, but add to the experience. Who can really say no to a glass of wine while painting with friends?! At the end of the class, you have a finished piece of artwork made by your own two hands.

Because my sister-in-law and I are both into nature, I figured the Birch Trees class would be one theme we would enjoy. Every venue offers a variety of different class themes & styles. There was two small classes going on the night we attended. The other class was working on pet portraits, which I now really want to do with Sam sometime. It would be awesome to paint pictures of our two cats!

They try to keep the intimidation factor to a minimum. These events are aimed at a variety of skill levels, and mostly cater to the beginner, with no experience. The instructor is on hand if you’re really stuck. You can make your own painting as easy or as complex as you want. They walk you through the painting design step-by-step. Ours really only had two steps: paint the background & then use a credit card dipped in paint to create the birch trees.

And of course you can make the painting more your own! I couldn’t resist asking for a bit of pink paint to add to my birch trees. They magically became Unicorn Trees.

Every participant’s painting turned out very different, even though we were technically doing the two same steps. Really fascinating! We had a lovely night out and I will definitely do it again sometime. Hubby is thinking we should add it to our “date night” list and rekindle our days of art school.
