Defining Self-CARE

Defining Self-Care - a blog post about self-care vs. self-comfort

Despite being sadly situated in the doldrums of winter (this particular winter being no exception), February is one of my favourite months of the year.

It’s my birthday month (and yes, I completely milk the concept of birthday MONTH).

I also have a soft spot for Valentine’s Day since it marks the first date I had with my husband 15 years ago. Not to mention that a holiday about loving others can only be a good thing for this world.

In recent years, I’ve taken the theme of “self-care” for the month of February. I use it as motivation (or maybe an excuse) to do some of the things that I usually put off in the name of Mothering or Scheduling or the Crazy Fast Pace of Life. It’s the month I am intentional about making hair appointments, waxing, pedicures, etc.

Turning 37

Happy Birthday, Turning 37

37 doesn’t feel much different. Although my 20-something self would never have pictured my life as it now. I haven’t had too many clear & exact pictures of my future. It’s not like I pictured having one particular job, or driving a particular car or having traveled to particular countries…

But I would not have pictured being a mom to only one child. Or having so many empty seats around the table at Christmas. We’ve said a lot of sad goodbyes over recent years.

Life keeps moving though; it waxes and wanes. Swells and shrinks. So many seasons yet to come. Or so I hope to be blessed with. More years ahead.

So turning another year older, is really not so bad at all.

I joked with Marcus that we won’t get to use these candles again until one of us turns 73 {if we’re lucky}. In his usual positive manner, he pointed out that Sam can use the “7” in another year, and our adopted children, that we pray for each day, can use them when they turn “3” and “7”. Life can look different to everyone. I’m just thankful to have a partner in this craziness.

{PS – we missed celebrating our 10th Anniversary together in November due to all the chaos. We had a trip planned to Victoria, but it got cancelled/postponed until the New Year. So here’s a shout out to my amazing hubby and more than a decade shared together!}

Advent with Children

Advent With Children ~ A mom's perspective on Christmas

As a household, we get excited for Christmas, we grab hold of events and traditions, we bake, we sing, we watch our favourite movies.

This year I’ve been trying extra hard to keep things simple and our schedule more open than past years.

I also want to try a few “retro” activities like simply driving around in pajamas to look at lights. Maybe build a classic gingerbread house. Some sledding. That kind of stuff.

I’m trying to avoid the bustle a bit.
