And Then He Turned Three

Three years ago today, we welcomed this cute bundle of warm cries & bright eyes into our life.

The days were long, but the weeks flew by as we kept our Sammy safe, happy, and loved.

frustrating at times, but also fascinating.

We’ve tried to keep up with this boy of ours, who is always changing and challenging us. This parenthood journey has been the greatest learning curve I have ever found myself on. His smiles still make it worth it though.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAMMY!!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Zoolights at the Calgary Zoo
Ahhh… so the month of December is speeding by, as usual. Here we are on Dec 23rd already and we’re busy loading up our car full of food, gifts, snowshoes, sleds, and storybooks in preparation for our Christmas in the woods. We’ll be out of town & off the grid for the next several days, while we spend Christmas at the family cabin with many of our loved ones.

Hardly any snow left in the city, but I’m hoping there’s at least enough at the cabin to pull Sammy around in his sled and possibly even snowshoe a bit. There will be many cozy cuddles by the fireplace, lots of cooking and devouring of tasty food, and plenty of dinosaurs thrown into the mix. Plus this year, I have a brand new little niece who will be celebrating her first Christmas. Lots of special moments will fill our days, I’m sure.

Wishing you a very joyous & merry Christmas this year! See you back here after the holidays.

Happy Halloween!

Hope you have a very spooook-tacular Halloween! Thought I would share some pics of the Halloween festivities we’ve indulged in this year. It’s been a good one for us and love that we got to experience Halloween at Disney World with the “Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party” and also on our Disney Fantasy Cruise with “Halloween on the High Seas”. A very special year indeed!!

Happy Hallowishes! A magical Halloween, in a magical place.

Countdown to Disney Vacation

We're actually only THREE days away now!!
We’re actually only THREE days away now!!

Yes, we are firmly in the countdown to our Disney Vacation! This week has been entirely dedicated to getting ready for the trip. So much to organize for both our stay at Disney World and our week-long Disney Cruise. It’s a little overwhelming, when the basics include pirate and Halloween costumes, plus we’ve never taken a beach-type vacation before AND Sam has never flown before. A lot of firsts packed into this trip.

I’m hoping to post more about our trip after we get back (with plenty of photos), in case you’re dreaming about your own Disney vacation. In the meantime, I thought I would share a couple of pre-trip tips with you. I’ve been collecting tips, cruise secrets, packing list suggestions, and the like on Pinterest, so head over there to get a helpful links to other blog posts.

One of the best suggestions I came across was pre-ordering baby & toddler items from Babies Travel Lite. What a stress-relieving solution for mamas (and papas)! Our little (ok, not so little) Sammy is not yet potty trained. In my mind, that meant we had two options: packing all the diapers, wipes & such we would need for an almost two week trip in his suitcase (including swim diapers) OR bringing just enough for a couple of days & trying to get to a store during our short Disney World stay to purchase the rest. Both options seemed a bit stressful. Who really wants to use any of their precious time at Disney World to go diaper shopping?! And that’s when I came across Babies Travel Lite. They’ve got diaper packages based on the number of days of your vacation. The packages are very customizable (choose your sizes, brand & type preferences). And it’s not just diapers, they have lots of stuff for meal time, bath time, and sun time. Even little potties for those that are in the potty training process. Place your order, and they will deliver it to your Disney hotel or cruise. We put together a diaper order and included some handy toddler snacks that we can bring along on our port adventures (since prepackaged snacks on cruises cost extra anyway). The beauty of it all is that now, we just walk onto our cruise and our box of goodies will be waiting in our stateroom.

We didn’t book our trip waaaaay in advance like a lot of families, but I’m sure it’s felt like a looong time for Sam. When a single day can feel like two or three to a toddler (and his mama), waiting four months for an oh-so-special Disney trip might as well be a year. As the day of departure grew closer though, I really wanted to do a simple countdown calendar, so Sam could have a more tangible way of seeing the passing of time and experience the excitement building up. I found several options, but went with free, printable design from 505 Design Inc. Just pick your design (Disney World or Disneyland), print, and cut. We hung ours in the kitchen and each morning we put up the new number and then count to it. Sammy can only count to 12, so I didn’t start the countdown until day 13. I think it’s a pretty fun pre-trip activity to do with kids!

Ok, that’s all I’ve got time for right now. Gotta get back to making lists, checking things off, and getting packed. Also still have boxes of tomatoes ripening in the basement that need to be made into sauce. See you when we get back from what will be an awesome family adventure!!!

Busiest Little Helper

Things have been busy, busy, busy. You can probably tell by this poor neglected blog. Sammy is getting dragged along from chore to chore. And even though his hands are little, he sure has been a BIG help. He might enjoy some more time to play with his trucks or go to the park, but I think he feels pretty proud every time he gets to help out the grown-ups in his life. I sometimes can’t believe the number of things he is learning to do at such an early age (hello, he’s only 2.5 years old)! I can imagine him living on our farm more & more. And maybe, I’m starting to picture my own life on the farm a bit more too.

His favourite thing so far to wash are radishes and carrots. Good thing there were too, since there were about 130 carrots to wash this past week for the Happiness By the Acre CSA. He was a super trooper! No complaints, just kept washing and admiring each carrot.

Sam was super helpful crushing the tomatoes for the big pot of sauce we made. This is our first batch of tomato sauce for the season and the first time I've ever canned it instead of freezing. More batches still to make with my little helper.

Flowers for Grandma

I’m back from my little journey down to Colorado for Grandma Rosie’s funeral. Happy to be home, but very grateful for the time to spend with my extended family. This trip can be described by no other word than “priceless”. It was a rare chance to travel with my brother & his wife, to show our love & support to our Grandfather, to meet some of our relatives from Missouri for the very first time, exchange hugs with people we haven’t seen for 20 years. I always cherish the stories my Grandfather tells, this time more than ever. There was a lot of family history that was brought up, things I’ve never known.

My sweet aunts sent me home with some things to remember my Grandma by: her crochet hooks, some unfinished embroidery, the necklace she wore for her 50th anniversary, a charm bracelet with photos of her grandchildren, one of her rosaries, some of her scarves (one still smells like her), a little crochet angora peter pan collar that she made & wore when they lived in Alaska in the 50s, and some other wonderful treasuries.

One of the things we got to help with while we were down in Colorado Springs, was one of the flower arrangements for Grandma’s funeral. My cousin, Shannon, is an incredibly talented floral designer and we had fun following her directions to make this heart-shaped arrangement:

Heart shaped floral wreath

My cousin, made an incredible rosary from roses that hung from the heart. She also did the gorgeous spray and the roses that were placed on Grandma’s casket.

My aunt made the arrangement with the statue of St.Francis and the wheat & tractor. So perfect for Grandma.

Sam with Great Grandma and Grandpa Springer
Sam with his Great Grandparents, September 2012

It is with a heavy heart that I share this news. My grandmother passed away on Saturday. It all happened very quickly, after a bad fall on Friday. Grandma Springer (or Grandma Rosie as the kids called her) was called into the arms of our Lord with her husband of 68 years by her side. I’m so glad she wasn’t alone. She was my last grandma. I’m grateful for the time we had to visit with her and Grandpa in November, and the time she got to spend watching Sam play. She was treated to several of his big hugs. I couldn’t find a photo from our last visit, but the one above is from the previous year (I can barely recognize Sam). I love this picture, because on the wall behind me, is a photo of each grandchild and great grandchild. Rosie & Grandpa even have a great, great grandchild.

My father is flying to Colorado on Wednesday to support Grandpa during this time and my brother & I are going to try and fly down later in the week for the funeral, so if I don’t get back onto the blog again this week, you know why.

I know that Rosie is now surrounded by the greatest love and peace we can ever experience. Forever in our hearts, goodbye Grandma.

DIY Bird Seed Rolls

DIY Bird Seed Rolls by Bubblegum Sass

Our little man really does like watching birds. Two-years old and I’m already picturing him as a geeky birder. Plus, he looooves to look through all of his daddy’s seed catalogues, learning the names of plants and flowers. Definitely a future geek. Oh, I love him so!

We have several storybooks with birds in them. His two fave are Riki’s Birdhouse by Monica Wellington and Outside Your Window: A First Book of Nature by Nicola Davies. Sam has been learning about different birds & what they eat. So when I suggested one morning that we “make a special treat to feed the birds”, Sam was super excited! He ran to the front door with his winter boots in hand! Once I got him to put his boot back for the moment, I quickly gathered the few supplies we would need:

DIY Bird Seed Roll By Bubblegum Sass, Ingredients

  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • Peanut butter
  • Plate (or baking sheet) with bird seed mix spread out on it (we used a variety of seeds, since I figured that both little & big birds would probably enjoy these, plus the occasional rascal squirrel)
  • Butter knife (the more dull, the better, if you’re going to let the kiddos to this craft)

From there, the project is pretty straight forward. Spread peanut butter onto the toilet paper rolls (TIP: if you’re using a type of peanut butter that normally resides in the fridge, you might want to pop it into the microwave briefly to soften it). I figured Sam would enjoy rolling the toilet paper rolls through the seeds best, but then I forgot how novel it was that he was getting to use a knife. Needless to say, he loved spreading the peanut butter! One roll kept him busy for quite a while. Oh, and as with all toddler projects, just embrace the mess!

Once you’ve got peanut butter spread all over the toilet roll, gently roll it through your bird seed mix. Sam kept trying to roll his “partially” peanut-butter-covered toilet roll in the seed mix. Next time, I won’t put the plate of seed mix out until he is done putting peanut butter on the rolls, just to keep things simple.

Ta-da! Homemade treats for the backyard critters!

Completed DIY Bird Seed Rolls By Bubblegum Sass

Now for the installation… really easy to do! Just slip the bird seed toilet paper rolls onto the branches of trees. I tucked ours into areas that would be protected from snow, and on branches that would be easy for birds to perch on and eat from. Once we had them hung on the trees, Sam & I sat in the backyard, listening to the birds and hoping that they would find our treats soon. Within a few days, the rolls were either picked completely clean (peanut butter and all) or the entire rolls disappeared (probably a squirrel or big crow made short work of ripping them off & dragging them back home).

This project is definitely on our list of things to do again! The supplies are things we often have on hand (if you have kids, I suggest you start an empty toilet paper roll collection), it was easy to do with a toddler without any frustration or tears, and clean-up just involved sweeping the kitchen a bit. Plus, it got us outside and into nature, probably the best benefit of the project! I’m sure all our feathered and furry friends were thankful for the surprise feast.
