Button-spiration

Okay. This is taking a love of buttons to the next level. Button sculptures! Simple buttons strung on fishing line to make incredible pieces of art! I would love to see these on display in person. The artist is Augusto Esquivel, born in Argentina & now living in Miami. His work definitely draws to mind that of my fav local artist Shelley Ouellet (check her out if you haven’t seen her work yet).

Here’s what Esquivel says of his button work in his artist statement:
“I realize how insignificant and small a simple sewing button can be as it lays in my grandmother’s sewing box, but at the same time how unique and precious it can become as part of a work of art. Like an atom in a molecule, each button serves and shapes the whole. I hold the button to my ear and it whispers to me, “I want to be…..”

And they do want to be so many things. Buttons, that is.

Okay. Here’s a goodie combining two things I love, buttons & books. It’s an itty bitty button book! I’ve had the urge to get back into doing some more artwork lately and I just think these would be adorable little doodle books! I also see them as like little charms to keep in your pocket (which would make a good Mother’s Day gift). Easy to make, small enough to carry around and enjoy.

The button book below was made by Designer and Illustrator Stephanie Davidson and was featured on a neat blog called Bonkers About Buttons (sounds like my kind of blog).

I have had a printout of this button embroidery project sitting in my sewing room for quite some time now. I keep eying it, wondering just when I’ll have a chance to stitch it up. It will continue to remain in the “one day” pile of projects, but here’s hoping that “one day” will come soon.

This particular pattern was done by doe-c-doe and is available for free download.

Happy stitching!

Now this week’s button project is one that I would love to make to decorate Sam’s room when he’s a bit older. Or even hang in the living room. It also might be neat to just hang the current season. My mom has an assortment of single quilt block designs that she hangs in her sewing room for the different seasons & holidays and I’ve always wanted to do something similar. Of course, button art would be more up my alley. The full tutorial for making the first version of the seasonal button tress can be found on the Spilt Milk blog.

Version one, my fav.

Version two, a little more colourful.
